Abstract
Recently, it has been pointed out that laser action is possible under conditions that fall outside the range normally considered practicable. A substantial literature has developed concerning the creation of inversionless laser gain, i.e., gain in the absence of an inversion of population between the terminal levels of the lasing transition.1 Several recent experiments have demonstrated transient inversionless amplification of light.2
