Abstract

Recently, it has been pointed out that laser action is possible under conditions that fall outside the range normally considered practicable. A substantial literature has developed concerning the creation of inversionless laser gain, i.e., gain in the absence of an inversion of population between the terminal levels of the lasing transition.¹ Several recent experiments have demonstrated transient inversionless amplification of light.²
