Abstract
The Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) is of great interest because it is an exactly solvable model for a quantum-physical interaction. Progress in micromaser experiments1 demonstrates the practical relevance of this model. More recently, it has been found that the motion of a trapped and laser-driven ion in the Lamb-Dicke regime can be described under appropriate resonance conditions by the JCM.2
