Measurements of excited-state diffusion coefficients by degenerate four-wave mixing

Abstract

Diffusion of atoms in buffer gases is a fundamental transport phenomenon. Excited- state diffusion is important in testing intermolecular-scattering potentials, explaining light-induced drift and light-diffusive pulling, as well as in applications such as isotope separation. Although there have been many measurements of ground-state diffusion coefficients, excited-state coefficients have been measured only indirectly in pump-probe experiments. We have developed a new method to directly measure the diffusion of excited atoms by using degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM).
