Thermodynamic Dicke phase transitions in atom traps

Abstract

We consider a system composed of a collection of identical two-level atoms interacting with the electromagnetic field in the dipole approximation and with an externally applied steady-state coherent driving field- The atoms interact only through the field and are all contained within a cubic resonance wavelength. The system is treated as a quantum-statistical ensemble in the rotating frame.1-3 The Hamiltonian in this frame is explicitly time dependent, and the exact analog of a spin temperature can be defined under the well-known Dicke isomorphism between a collection of spinors and a collection of two-level atoms.
