Observation of optical coherent transients by current switching a semiconductor diode laser

Abstract

We report a new, simple technique for measuring coherent transients, such as the photon echo and free-induction decay, by the application of small current pulses to switch the frequency of a diode laser. We have used this technique to make what we believe to be the first measurements of optical free-induction decay in the Tm3+ ion. An analysis of the heterodyne beat signal can also give, in real time, the frequency history of the laser during the preparation, switching, and detection periods. There have been a number of reports on frequency switching and heterodyne detection of coherent transients by using intracavity' phase modulators, extracavity acousto-optic modulators, or electric or magnetic field switching of the energy levels of the material system.1
