Abstract

We report the observation of steady-state, sub-Doppler light amplification by coherence in Doppler-broadened A-type Rb atomic systems formed by the Rb D2 transitions 5S1/2 (F = 2) ↔ 5P3/2 ↔ 5S1/2 (F = 3). The experiment was carried out in a 75-mm Rb vapor cell heated to about 60°C. A cw single frequency Tbsapphire laser was used as a strong coupling laser that drives the Rb 5S1/2 F = 3 (or F = 2) → 5P3/2 transition and generates a pair of dressed states. A free running diode laser with a linewidth ~50 MHz was used as an incoherent pump laser and tuned to the Doppler broadened Rb 5s1/2 F = 2 (or F = 3) → 5P3/2 transition. An external-cavity diode laser was used as a weak probe laser that couples the Rb 5si/2 F = 2 (or F = 3) → 5P3/2 transition. The coupling laser and the probe laser were propagating in the same direction.
