Femtosecond mid-infrared spectroscopy on liquid water: The influence of hydrogen-bonding on reorientational motion

Abstract

We present the first femtosecond mid-infrared pump-probe study on liquid water. Surprisingly, the water molecules show only two strongly different orientational mobilities that correlate with the local hydrogen-bond structure.
