A magneto-optical surface trap for atoms

Abstract

We demonstrate a magneto-optical trap (MOT) in close vicinity to a surface. Although trapped atoms approach the reflecting surface to within 100 nm, their temperature and density are not seriously affected compared to a standard MOT.
