Lasing without inversion in a four-level Raman system

Abstract

Atomic coherence and quantum interference effects play a fundamental role in determining the optical properties of matter. Several authors have recently analyzed many new interesting phenomena, which include electromagnetically induced transparency, lasing without inversion, and resonant ehancement of refractive index. In this paper we demonstrate the existence of lasing without inversion resulting from quantum interference effects for the special class of far-infrared Raman lasers. These lasers have been known for a long time to have a high off-resonant gain.
