Abstract

The magneto-optical trap has become the most widely used source of cold atoms.1 However, despite its success there remain some limitations. For example, in experiments on precision spectroscopy or BEC, it is often desirable to transfer atoms to a region of cleaner vacuum, but there are no techniques which achieve this without significant loss of phase space density.
