Laser cooling thulium-doped glass by 24K from room temperature

Abstract

Thulium-doped glass is cooled 24 K below ambient by arranging a Brewster-cut sample in a multiple-pass pump geometry. Modelling based on new spectroscopic data predicts the feasibility of achieving cryogenic temperatures.
