Maximum likelihood noise reduction

Abstract

The main purpose of processing a degraded image is to determine as closely as possible what object created that image. There are a number of factors which govern the quality of the processing: the severity of the degradation; the amount of noise; the sampling interval; the background estimate; the processing algorithm itself. However, the noise in the image will generally limit the ability to do further processing. We would like to be able to reduce the effects of the noise without degrading the underlying image.
