Abstract

The theory for passive remote sensing from a layer of cloud or rain has been developed by using the Mie scattering phase functions [1,2]. Extending the theory to include active remote sensing, we employ all four Stokes parameters for the intensities and calculate for the bistatic scattering coefficients, backscattering cross sections, crosstalk, and brightness temperatures. The theoretical results are illustrated and compared with various experimental data [2-6]. The same techniques are applicable in the infrared range for scattering by aerosol particles.
