Abstract

A survey of the fracture mechanics of glass and brittle ceramics, with special attention to contact configurations, will be presented. The underlying focus is "indentation fracture," where a sharp point is used to generate a deformation-crackpattern in the material surface. This pattern forms the basis for analysis of many wear and polishing phenomena in brittle materials.
