Abstract
Inhomogeneous distributions of spectral lines are a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. In the optical spectroscopy of dye molecules embedded in transparent solids, the inhomogeneous widths are usually much larger than the corresponding homogeneous linewidths of single molecules.
