Abstract

We computationally analyze an optical waveguide consisting of a one-dimensional pho-tonic crystal (PC) embedded in a large cross-section rib waveguide. The structure is analyzed using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique. The simulation results indicate extremely low loss waveguiding is possible. Moreover, the PC has a gap-midgap ratio (∆ω/ωmid) of 0.913, which is one of the largest ratios reported for a photonic crystal.
