Abstract

We showed the polishing mechanism of optical glass. It is that the hydrated layer formed by the chemical reaction between glass and polishing slurry is scratched and removed by the polishing grains, so the polishing rate is determined by the formation rate and the hardness of the hydrated layer and is dependent upon the chemical durability and the hardness of glass, therefore, it can be said that polishing of glass is a kind of chemico-mechanical process.
