Rate-Adaptive Coding for Optical Fiber Transmission Systems

Abstract

Future networks may employ rate adaptation, e.g., extending reach where regeneration is unavailable. Fixed-symbol-rate PM-QPSK with variable-rate codes yields bit rates of 100/50/25 Gbit/s over distances of 2000/3000/4000 km. Results are compared to information-theoretic limits.
