Coded Modulation Design for Robustness against Linear and Nonlinear Distortion

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In recent years, design of coding and modulation formats for the optical fiber channel has become increasingly important. We review different design methodologies for optimizing coded performance against linear and nonlinear distortion. The impact of soft-decision FEC is discussed, along with the different optical channels that are commonly encountered.
