Abstract

Emission from 100 psec laser-produced plasmas has been used to excite two-electron (shakeup) photoionization processes and produce large population inversions in He+ with gain at 164 nm and in Ar+ with gain at 428 and 477 nm. Shakeup processes have recently been used to identify autoionizing levels1 in Cd+ and proposed as an excitation source2 for VUV lasers m Li+.
