Abstract

Soft-x ray amplification has been observed on the Lyman-α transition of hydrogen-like lithium ions by optical-field-induced ionization, using a subpicosecond KrF laser pulse (0.5ps,50 mJ) focused at 1017 W/cm2. A small signal gain coefficient of 20 cm1 was obtained at 13.5 nm. Roles of a preformed plasma for the realization of an optical-field-induced ionization x-ray laser are discussed.
