Abstract

Using a rigorous electromagnetic method based on a curvilinear transformation of the coordinate system, we demonstrate the role of localized surface plasmon resonances on deep two-dimensional metallic gratings in enhancing the sensibility of optical sensing of several nanometer thin layers deposited on the grating surface. Comparison with the non-localized surface plasmons on shallow gratings shows that a significant enhancement and strong localization of electric field intensity can be obtained when using deep corrugation.
