Abstract

The use of optical systems is pervasive in the modern world and getting more so. However, few practitioners of the art realize how much development has occurred in the areas of extreme environments. This paper gives a short overview of oil & gas optical sensing and a case study in the development of a downhole VIS-NIR photometric analyzer for crude oil characterization.
