Abstract

Metalloporphyrins and related compounds have been widely used as sensitisers in the photolysis of water for solar energy storage. In particular, zinc porphyrins have been used with considerable success in this laboratory in hydrogen generating systems (1). Whilst this photochemistry originates from relatively long lived triplet states, a knowledge of the primary photophysics is clearly important. Furthermore, in heterogeneous photochemical systems, reaction often occurs from excited singlet states, as it does in photosynthesis. We present here excited state absorption spectra of zinctetraphenyl porphyrin.
