Abstract

In recent years, a variety of techniques have been developed to generate and detect ultrafast electromagnetic transients with bandwidths up to 1 THz1. The spectrum of these transients spans part of the microwave, submillimeter wave and far-infrared range of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The spectroscopic benefits include the enormous spectral bandwidth covered, the coherent detection that enables to extract both real and imaginary part of the dielectric response function, and a sensitivity that far exceeds the sensitivity of conventional far-infrared spectrometers in the same spectral range.
