Abstract

The sensitisation of wide band gap semiconductors to visible irradiation by the adsorption of dyes to their surface is of widespread technological importance. It is the basis of silver photography and electrophotography, and has for many years been studied as a means of solar energy conversion. Electrochemical PV solar cells employing dye sensitised nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films have already achieved >10 % energy conversion efficiencies [1] and are now in commercial production. However, the mechanism of the dye sensitisation remains poorly understood, and this missing information is impeding technological applications.
