Abstract

In the focus of a short pulse, high power laser, electrons oscillate at nearly the speed of light, giving rise to novel effects in a new regime of nonlinear optics. For instance, electrons can be accelerated to GeV energies in a centimeter distance. Acceleration by lasers may produce a new generation of compact ultrashort duration high-energy electron and photon sources.
