Abstract

The nonadiabatic self modulation experienced by a few-cycle optical pulse propagating in a tunnel-ionizing gas is predicted to result in phase-matched generation of above keV x-ray harmonics. Experimental evidence of this phase-matching mechanism is presented for lower- frequency harmonics.
