Photonic Crystal Fibers: Speeding up the Ultrafast

Abstract

The first working example of photonic crystal fibre (PCF) was reported at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference in 1996 [1]. In place of the usual cylindrically symmetric refractive index profile, peaking in the centre, PCF is formed from a strand of pure silica glass which has running parallel to its axis a carefully designed lattice of microscopic air capillaries [2]. Guiding “cores” are created in this two-dimensional “photonic crystal array” by filling in or enlarging groups of one or more air holes [3-4].
