Quantum coherent control of free electrons by optical near-fields in an ultrafast electron microscope

Abstract

We demonstrate the quantum coherent control of free electron momentum states by confined light fields. Optical phase modulation drives multilevel Rabi oscillations, enables Ramsey-typ electron interferometry and is predicted to facilitate the generation of attosecond electron pulse trains.
