Double-Pass Measurements of Retinal Image Quality in Green and Near Infrared Light

Abstract

Recent double pass measurements of the ocular monochromatic modulation transfer function (MTF) have been obtained in visible light (1). Near infrared light has not been used before in the double pass technique despite that the retinal reflection factor is higher for larger wavelengths and that near infrared measurements would not affect the viewing conditions. One of the potential problems of using near infrared in the double pass is the larger retinal scattering. This should produce double pass retinal images with larger scattering halos, affecting in principle the estimates of the MTF. In this work, we evaluate the possibilities of using near infrared illumination in the double pass technique. We record double pass images of green (543 nm) and near infrared (780 nm) point sources and show that infrared and green estimates of the ocular MTF are similar.
