Abstract

Although bifocal and multifocal spectacle lenses are commonly used in presbyopia, their fundamental disadvantages makes the use of alternative technologies1 (liquid crystal lenses, gradient index materials and deformable lenses) seem at least superficially attractive. But it is perhaps worth considering what use can be made of existing single vision lenses to delay the need for more sophisticated types of correction.
