Caustics in Astigmatic Optical Systems

Abstract

Caustics in the optical systems are created when, among other things, spherical aberration is present. When astigmatism is also present several new interesting effects are introduced. Using a ray vector field formalism, a treatment of the combined effects of the spherical aberration and astigmatism is given. The double caustic lines which have been shown to cause monocular diplopia are found and their character quantified.
