Abstract

Good vision requires the proper function of two pathways: 1) the optical pathway which extends from the cornea to the retinal photoreceptors, and 2) the neural pathway which extends from the photoreceptors to the brain. In a clinical study of patients with both normal and cataractous eyes, we have investigated how the optical and neural components together contribute to vision by testing the Campbell-Green equation, CStot = CSneur * MTF.1 CStot represents the contrast sensitivity function determined by chart testing. CSneur is the neural contrast sensitivity function. MTF is the optical modulation transfer function.
