When a Friend Becomes a Foe: The Optical Fiber Fuse

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a new phenomenon discovered by the author changed the way optical fibers could be treated: instead of remaining a safe carrier and a master of the light it guided, the fiber suddenly became a vulnerable slave. This paper presents the discovery of low power damage, also known as the “fiber-fuse”, and insights into this, as yet not fully understood effect peculiar to waveguides.
