Abstract
This paper describes a shallow-type truncated bar-code symbol-reading point-of-sale scanner which can be operated while seated and which employs a high diffraction efficiency flat-type hologram disk. This scanner has four important and essential functions for bar-code reading such as laser beam scanning in many directions, laser beam focusing without an optical lens, bar-code signal light collection on a small size detector, and elimination of ambient light. The computer-simulated design for optimizing the hologram scanner and the related fixed mirrors have realized a new shallow (16-cm) scanner that projects a dynamic-cross laser scan pattern suitable for reading truncated bar-codes.
