Abstract
Feature Issue on Transmission in Optically Transparent Core Networks
The properties of semiconductor optical amplifiers offer new strategies for building dynamic optical networks. Three key characteristics are its coverage of the full range of wavelengths that are accessible using semiconductor source lasers, a transient response that enables wavelength add/drop without the need for external transient control, and the possibility of direct modulation, which enables its use as a switch in packet networks.
