I would like to congratulate two of our topical editors, Rosario Martinez-Herrero and Richard Holmes, on their election as Fellows of The Optical Society. This is a well-deserved recognition of their years of outstanding work and their ongoing contributions to the field.

I am very pleased to introduce Christine Fernandez-Maloigne as our new Deputy Editor at JOSA A. Christine is stepping down as Topical Editor to take on this leadership role at JOSA A. Her standing on the world stage as an expert in color, image processing, and vision will help us better serve these areas. Moreover, I am grateful to have her voice in discussions of the wider direction of the Journal. This publication may be called the Journal of the Optical Society of America A, but it is very much the world’s journal and The Optical Society itself is very much a worldwide organization. Since Christine also serves as the Vice-Rector for International Relations at her home institution, the University of Poitiers, France, her perspective on the international scientific community will be a great benefit to us all.

We are also very fortunate to have two new editors joining JOSA A. Alessandro Rizzi will take over the area of color science, and Antigone Marino will take over diffraction and gratings. Together with Fabrizio Frezza, they form our new Italian triad. It is wonderful to have such outstanding representation from the home country of Galileo Galilei, Francesco Maria Grimaldi, Giuliano Toraldo di Francia, and Franco Gori.

Antigone Marino

Gratings and Diffraction

Antigone Marino is a researcher at the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems of the Italian National Research Council. She received her master’s degree in Physics in 2000 and her research doctorate in New Technologies in 2004, both from the Physical Science Department of Federico II University, Naples, Italy. Her current research spans the fields of optics and materials science, with a special interest in soft matter optics applied to telecommunications. Antigone helped found the International OSA Network of Students for The Optical Society (OSA) in 2007, and in 2010 she started the Young Minds project, in collaboration with the European Physical Society, serving as project chair from 2013 to 2016. Since 2016 she has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Photonics Society Italian Chapter, as well as the OSA Member & Education Services Council. She has received several awards and recognitions. In 2016 she was appointed as an OSA Ambassador, and in 2015 she was a recipient of the OSA Outstanding Young Professionals Award. In 2015 and 2013 she won the best communication award in the Physics of Matter division at the National Congress of the Italian Physical Society.

Alessandro Rizzi

Applied Color Science

Alessandro Rizzi is Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Milan, Italy, teaching Fundamentals of Digital Imaging and Colorimetry. Since 1990, his research interests have covered the field of digital imaging with a particular interest in color, visualization, photography, HDR, and the perceptual issues related to digital imaging, interfaces, and lighting. Alessandro is the head of the MIPS Lab in the Department of Computer Science. Additionally, he is one of the founders of the Italian Color Group, Secretary of CIE Division 8, and IS&T Fellow and Vice President. In 2015 he received the Davies medal from the Royal Photographic Society. He is co-chair of the IS&T Conference “Color Imaging: Displaying, Processing, Hardcopy and Applications,” member of several conference program committees related to color and digital imaging, and author of more than 300 scientific works.
