Fast MTF Calculation in the Presence of Diffraction

Abstract

Calculating the MTF of a lens from the lens specification is very time consuming when done in a straightforward manner. One method is to compute the Fourier transform of the line spread function. Even when done on a computer, this is a lengthy calculation. Our programs instead construct a mathematical model of the image. This model has the property that its Fourier transform is known almost immediately when the model is completed.
