Abstract

The following article, which reviews a number of pressing contemporary issues in the field of astronomy, is the first in a series of reports on the current state of the academic disciplines. The series, to be published from time to time in The Week in Review, will discuss in each case the outstanding debates and current problems to which the academic disciplines are addressing themselves in today’s world.
