Abstract
The width of the impulse response of multimode fibers with power law index profiles depends on the α-value The power law exponent. For constant α, optimum pulse width is achievable only in a very narrow range of values centered around α = 2 − (12/5)Δ. We show in this paper that the optimum width of the impulse achievable for fibers with nonoptimum α-values provided α varies slowly along the fiber and deviates on average by equal amounts to either side of its (constant) optimum value.
