Abstract

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Optics of the University of Rochester, its history, staff, and students, and its interactions with and influence in the world of optics are briefly reviewed. The author, wife of one of the two original faculty and herself an opticist, observes from the sidelines.
