Abstract
Quantitative infrared spectra of hot gases are of use in schemes to predict radiances of large flames. An infrared spectroradiometer equipped for digital readout of spectra has been used to measure infrared spectral absorptances and radiances of flames burning a variety of nitrogenous and carbonaceous liquid propellants. Representative flame spectra are presented for several propellant types. The results illustrate that flame spectral radiances depend primarily on temperature, pressure, and composition; fuel characteristics play a part mainly in determining the values of the primary variables. There are some interesting connections between this work and the early researches of Coblentz and his contemporaries.
