Abstract
Starting with the threefold concept of a range finder system, target, range finder, and operator, equations are developed and explained which enable prediction of performance of such a system, based on assumed parameters, in terms of probability versus range. Two cases are discussed: (1) when the range finder system is used by itself and performance criterion is expressed as some small percentage of the true range, and (2) when the range finder is used in conjunction with a weapon system and performance criterion relates to the probability of obtaining hits on vertical targets at various distances from the range finder—weapon system combination.
