Abstract
Methods are described for computing the total absorptances of bands of atmospheric gases in solar spectra based on (1) empirical relationships between total absorptance and absorber concentration and equivalent pressure for homogeneous mixtures of the absorbing gas and a broadening gas and (2) relationships obtained for two samples of gas. The variation of the atmospheric heating rate with pressure due to the absorption of solar radiation by such bands is estimated, and it is shown that for bands in the solar spectrum due to gases with a constant mixing ratio, an effective pressure = ½P0 can be used with an error of less than 5%.
