Optical communications through a dispersive medium: a performance bound for photocounting

Abstract

This paper considers the effects of pulse stretching and background radiation on a binary optical communication system with a photon counting detector. An idealized receiver processor is developed which provides a lower bound on the error probability that can be achieved by any realizable processor. A very simple approximation to the error probability is shown to be valid for intersymbol interference over more than about five-bit intervals.
