Abstract
Noise associated with output fluctuation of a diode laser has been observed in the autofocusing and tracking signals of optical videodisc players. This phenomenon has been found to be the result of asymmetric distribution of laser noise on the segmented detectors that derive the control signals. Analysis shows that control frequency noise is caused by the combined effect of interference on the detector and coherency variation in the diode laser due to optical feedback. To reduce this noise, diode lasers in which coherency does not change under optical feedback are desirable.
