Abstract
The Fowler-Sung profile predicts that a nonzero mass ratio (m/M) of perturber to emitter atoms has a narrowing effect with respect to the conventional Voigt line shape. In this paper, two analytic approximations to the Fowler-Sung profile are given which give absolute errors between 0.0001 for m/M close or equal to zero and 0.01 for high values of m/M. Both approximations are used to develop procedures for analyzing Fowler-Sung profiles by means of nonlinear least-squares fitting. Moreover, a function is proposed as an analytic approximation to profile measured by a Fabry-Perot interferometer, and the corresponding technique of analysis is discussed.
