Abstract
A method is presented for direct measurement of the phase gradient of an object’s spatial-frequency spectrum from stellar speckle images. The process is based on the differentiation properties of Fourier transforms. In contrast to phase difference techniques, the phase gradient process lends itself to coherent optical processing of the required 2-D Fourier transform and differentiation operations. Results of a computer simulation and a noise analysis are given.
