Abstract
A relationship was developed between visibility and backscatter at 1.06-μm wavelength. These results were developed from information derived from eighty-eight height profiles of particle size distributions taken in clouds, fog, and haze. This relationship broke down into two regions, a linear region and a nonlinear region. The linear region, the lower visibility, extends from 750 to 200–300 m. The form of this equation is V = 3.912/[1.2(1/km) + 18B]. This agrees with the theory. The second portion was a curve covering the range from 750 m to 4 km. The form of the curve is V = 3.912/[ln(A + CB2)]. These curves fit the data rather well.
